The eelgrass surrounding this bay pipefish provides ideal cover. The bay pipefish (Sygnathus leptorhynchus) is an elongated relative of the seahorse. After the eggs of the bay pipefish are fertilized, the female puts them into the male’s brood pouch, and he cares for the eggs until the young are born. This fish grows to about fifteen inches (39 cm) long, and has a range from central Alaska to northern Mexico.
