Project Description

It seems this unusual (Henricia) sea star may be one of a few yet undescribed species found in the Pacific Northwest.  At first I thought it was a pale looking blood star (Henricia leviuscula) and sent an email to Neil McDaniel asking his opinion.  He has a sea star information website “Sea Stars of the Pacific Northwest” that can be found here:

Neil mentioned there are “many similar-looking and undescribed species (of Henricia) found in our waters,” and also that researchers are currently working on trying to sort this out.  I’m looking forward to one day seeing a few new sea star species mentioned in the marine life ID books available to divers.
