It was interesting to see this rostrate barnacle (Balanus rostratus) feeding, while attached to a swimming scallop also feeding in the plankton filled current.  This tall barnacle often has a smooth surface, and the opening where the basket-like limbs (cirri) extend to gather plankton in the current is fairly small.  The rostrate barnacle has a range from the Aleutian Islands, Alaska to northern Washington, and can grow to 2 inches (5.6 cm) in height.
