Project Description

This plainfin midshipman (Porichthys notatus) was resting on the ocean floor during a night dive but in the day will be out of sight buried under the silt or sand.  This fish can be found in deep water (1181 feet, 360 m), and migrates to the intertidal zone during breeding season where males make humming sounds to attract females.  The plainfin midshipman can grow to around 15 inches (38 cm) long, with a range from central Alaska to northern Mexico.
