Project Description

This painted anemone (Urticina crassicornis) looked impressive as it was fully extended with bright colouration.  The painted anemone has a wide colour range including red-green which is the most common and why this animal is often called a Christmas anemone.  Other possible colours include any combination of yellow, tan, green, brown, red or olive.  The column of this anemone has a bumpy surface texture and can be up to 8 inches (20 cm) in diameter.  The tentacles are banded, and this anemone can live to around 80 years of age.  I’m looking forward to photographing a candy-striped shrimp which often lives on or near this anemone.  The painted anemone can grow to 12 inches (30 cm) tall, and has a range from northern Alaska to southern California.
