Project Description

I was really surprised when I saw this orange zoanthid covered acorn barnacle (Epizoanthus scotinus)!  The individual polyps along the outer edges reproduce asexually by budding, so that the entire mat is made up of clones.  Each polyp can grow to about 2 inches (5 cm) high, and 3/4 inch (2 cm) wide.  Orange zoanthids have a range that includes Siberia, as well as northern Alaska to southern California.
