Project Description

The northern spearnose poacher (Agonopsis vulsa) is a bottom dwelling nocturnal fish that is a great find on a night dive.  It has a very distinctive snout with whisker-like spines below and rounded forward pointing sensors at the tip.  The northern spearnose poacher relies on its excellent camouflage to blend into sandy areas near rocky reefs and will remain still when approached by a diver.  This fish can grow to 8 inches (20 cm) long, with a range from central Alaska to central California.
