Project Description

This male lingcod (Ophiodon elongatus) is lurking in the background protecting his nest.  The egg masses can be quite large, around the size of a football.   If a diver is not cautious during this kind of encounter males have been known to be aggressive.  The lingcod is a game fish in the Pacific Northwest that is in decline due to overfishing.  They can grow to five feet (1.5 m) in length and weigh up to 100 pounds, with a range from central Alaska to northern Mexico.
