Project Description

During a dive at Oak Leaf, near Nanoose Bay, I saw this colourful leather star (Dermasterias imbricata) resting on a steep rock wall.  This sea star has a skin texture that is smooth and leathery, and is speckled orange-red with grey edging.  Apparently this sea star also has a garlic-like odour.  The leather star can grow to about 12 inches (30 cm) across, with a range from central Alaska to northern Mexico.
