Project Description

This juvenile red rock crab (Cancer productus) with bold racing stripes was hanging out in shallow water near me at the end of a dive.  Young red rock crabs can have different colouration but this one caught my eye.  A mature red rock crab with claws tipped in black and brick red shell (carapace), make this animal easy to identify.  Adults have a shell width of about 8 inches (20 cm), and their range is from central Alaska to northern Mexico.
