Project Description

During a night dive I noticed a juvenile plainfin midshipman (Porichthys notatus) resting in shallow water.  In the day this nocturnal fish will be out of sight buried under the silt or sand.  The plainfin midshipman can be found in deep water (1181 feet, 360 m), and migrates to the intertidal zone during breeding season where males make humming sounds to attract females.  This fish can grow to around 15 inches (38 cm) long, with a range from central Alaska to northern Mexico.
