Project Description

A juvenile plainfin midshipman (Porichthys notatus) was hiding under the sand with only a curious eye exposed.  This nocturnal fish can be found in deep water (1181 feet, 360 m), and migrates to the intertidal zone during breeding season where males make humming sounds to attract females.  The plainfin midshipman can grow to around 15 inches (38 cm) long, with a range from central Alaska to northern Mexico.
