Project Description

A juvenile heart crab (Phyllolithodes papillosus) kept a close eye on me as I slowly approached to take a photo.  The heart crab has its claws and legs covered with hard spines.  This crab gained its name because of the heart shaped pattern on its carapace.  In adults the carapace is about four inches (10 cm) across.  The heart crab has a range from Alaska to southern California.
