Project Description

These old giant acorn barnacle (Balanus nubilus) shell plates protect a male scalyhead sculpin at Maple Bay.  I’d like to thank Jeff Marliave for offering his help in the identification of this male scalyhead sculpin (Artedius harringtoni).

A living giant acorn barnacle is very large, growing to six inches (15 cm) across.  These barnacles may be solitary or live in large clusters, with a range from southern Alaska to northern Mexico.
