Project Description

During a dive near Campbell River I saw this large funnel sponge (Semisuberites cribrosa) out in an exposed location.  This sponge has a colour range that includes cream to brown as well as grey, and prefers high current areas.  The funnel sponge often has a rough textured or bumpy surface, and is attached to the rocks below by a stalk with a root-like holdfast.  This sponge can grow to 12 inches (30 cm) tall, and has a range from southern Alaska to northern Washington.
