Chefchaouen is a small city in the Rif Mountains of northwest Morocco and is famous for its blue painted buildings. Some believe the walls were originally painted blue to remind people of the Mediterranean Sea. Others believe the blue symbolizes the waterfall where people get their drinking water, allowing them to survive in a hostile environment. Chefchaouen was founded in 1471 and at the time a fortress was built to keep out Portuguese invaders.
