Project Description

I noticed this butterfly crab (Cryptolithodes typicus) feeding on a wall ledge, which was a great find as most of the time their legs are tucked underneath its carapace hidden from view.  This crab is well camouflaged making it difficult to see, and it often can resemble a piece of shell debris.  The butterfly crab has many colour variations, with a carapace width of about three inches (7.6 cm).  Its range is from southern Alaska to southern California.
