Project Description

This burgundy spotted umbrella crab (Cryptolithodes sitchensis) was noticed on a rock ledge at the Ogden Point Breakwater in Victoria.  Umbrella crabs are fairly small, only growing to about 4 inches (10 cm) across and live in shallow depths along exposed coastlines.  Its head spike flares out at the end, which is opposite to the similar looking butterfly crab.  The umbrella crab has a range from southern Alaska to southern California.
