This bering hermit crab (Pagurus beringanus) was a lucky discovery as its shell home is completely covered by a sponge, making it difficult to spot. I actually saw the sponge move which caught my eye! I like how there is a chimney on the very top to complete this fellow’s home. Bering hermits have pale bluish or grey walking legs, and also have red banding at the joints. Their main body length is about one inch (2.5 cm), and these crabs have a range from northern Alaska to central California.
