A large white deep blade shrimp (Spirontocaris prionota) blended well into the surrounding shell fragments on the ocean floor.  The vertically compressed head spike (rostrum) is rounded in shape with a small saw-toothed edge for protection.  These shrimps often like to live around the fine shell litter that collects at the base of walls.  The colour is highly variable, and there are large spines protruding from the carapace that have serrated edges.  The deep blade shrimp can grow to 1.5 inches (4 cm) in length, with a range that includes the Sea of Japan, and also the Bering Sea to northern Mexico.
