The cane toad is an invasive species to Australia, and adults can reach a whopping weight of four pounds. The cane toad was introduced to Australia in 1935 in an attempt to control the native cane beetle, which is a pest of sugar cane. The sugar cane crops were a major source of income for Australia at the time. There is no evidence however that the cane toad has had any impact on the cane beetle. This large fellow was noticed in my cousin’s backyard in Queensland, Australia.
